The corporate social responsibility programmes of Ganga Hospital will be consolidated under the theme ‘ Swasam’ which will breathe new life to the injured and disabled through ten ‘ Community out-reach social service programmes’.
Project Helpline – “Help for the helpless” Free deformity correction surgeries for poor children
The aim of this project is to treat deformities due to a variety of causes such as congenital, birth deformities, post infective deformities. These deformities are more common among the poor and socially underprivileged and hence often go without appropriate treatment. The Project has been functioning from 1998 and this will be enhanced in the coming years.
Free deformity correction surgeries were done to a value of Rs.33.6 lacs in the last five years. The number of children who were benefited from the programme is 259.
“Help for the Hands in Need” Project
This project enables poor patients who deserve complicated hand surgical procedures free of cost. The surgeries range from management of hand injuries in poor industrial workers to children with congenital anomalies and cerebral palsy. Under this project, free surgeries were performed worth Rs.3,64,690 in 2004 and Rs.6,88,715 in 2005.
UYIR – People’s Movement against road accidents. You cannot create life but you can save one
There is one death on the Indian roads every six minutes. While enforcement is necessary, accidents cannot be reduced without public participation. This project is to increase the public awareness and compliance to road safety rules. Special emphasis is placed on programmes for school children in order to teach them young.
Road Safety & First aid awareness programmes for School Children and college students
To enlighten the children on immediate measures that have to be taken after an accident so that a ‘ second accident’ is avoided due to improper mobilization and transport. Special mock shows were done at school premises.
To date, more than 4000 children have been covered in the programme. It will be our endeavour to bring this target to 10,000 in the next two years.
Ganga Hospital Accident Helpline Centres
Ganga Hospital in association with Rotary is handling three Accident Helpline Centres at Mavuthampathy, Kanjikode and Madukkarai. Ambulances are stationed at all these centres and manned by the paramedical staff of Ganga Hospital. The approximate cost of the maintenance of the three booths is about Rs.8 lacs a year.
Till date, 650 high way road traffic accident victims have been resuscitated by these centres and transported for immediate care.
Ganga Free First Aid Centre with St John’s Ambulance, Tirupur
Ganga Hospital along with St. John’s Ambulance Services started a centre for emergency care and ambulance services to transport accident victims to the nearest centre at the earliest. It is an ongoing project and nearly 41593 patients have been benefited.
Project ‘Smile train’
Cleft lip and palate deformities are devastating as they produce major costmetic blemish and also serious impairment to normal speech and hearing . Ganga Hospital in association with Smile Train International provides free surgeries for people with cleft lip and palate deformities.
Ganga Hand Injury Support Group
It was formed to provide information related to hand injuries, their treatment, rehabilitation, Government aids and any other information that a hand injury patient would require.
Ganga Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation
This foundation has been created to support various academic activities like training of doctors and nurses, holding international scientific meetings and conferences, funding for research activities of the department, providing funds for ‘Project Helpline’ and primary education to deserving under-priveleged children.
To date, more than Rs.26 lacs has been spent for the above activities from the time of its inception.
10) Rural Health programmes.
We propose to create a mobile van with well-equipped basic medical facilities and reach out to the rural people – immediate accessibility to basic health care. Special emphasis will be to identify and help patients with physical deformities like cleft lip, limb deformities and arthritis in the elderly. **
Progressive hunch back deformity of the spine leading to slow paralysis of legs – correction of deformity performed by a single staged complex spine operation.
Shanti (name changed) was a 16-year old girl but unfortunately suffered from disease called achondroplastia where the growth of the spine and the legs are affected due to growth abnormalities. Normally these children do not grow to the normal height and are dwarfed throughout their lives. Unfortunately, she had an additional problem where the spine growth was also altered in such a way that she was rapidly developing hunchback in the middle of the spine. This deformity has resulted in stretching of the spinal cord which was giving rise to progressive weakness in her legs. Left alone, she was in the risk for the following:
Hunch-back deformity would have become very severe and this would have resulted in more severe stretching and pressure on the spinal cord. As a result, she would have become completely paraplegic and would have also lost control in her bladder and bowels.
The deformity would have resulted in progressive construction of the chest and there would have been secondary failure of the heart and lungs causing great risk to life.
Problem:
Treatment of these deformities are very challenging and are performed only in very few centres as the risk of complications are very very high. They also require very expensive and sophisticated instruments and equipments. In many centres in the world, the surgery is performed in two stages:
In the first instance, the operation is done from the front where the spinal cord is decompressed and all the bones that are pressing on the nerves are removed. The gap will be filled with bones from the leg or by titanium cages.
In the second instance, the operation will be done from behind and further correction of the deformity will be done and the corrected position will be maintained by titanium screws and rods. The disadvantage of this procedure is that the patient has to have two major surgeries and also operating from the front. In these cases, children are at a little risk because their heart and lung functions are already compromised.
A new procedure – Single staged closing-opening osteotomy. To treat this complex procedure – we have devised a new surgical procedure where the deformity can be corrected in one single staged surgery. The patient needs to stay for a very little time in the hospital and the risks of surgery are very much reduced. Here, the spine is approached from behind and by special dissection manouevers, the entire spine in the front and back are exposed. The wedge is removed from the spine without any damage to the spinal cord. Special expertise is required to monitor that the blood supply to the cord is not reduced during the entire procedure. The spinal bone above and below the wedge correction are secured by titanium screws and rods and the correction is maintained by special instruments. The gap in the anterior column of the spine is filled by a specially designed titanium cage which is filled with bone chips. The patient is maintained in a brace for a period of six months till the bone heals and consolidates in the correct position.
Special features of this procedure;
The entire course of the severe deformity is performed in one single operation. In patient stay is reduced from 30 to 10 days. The entire procedure is done from behind and hence chest or abdomen need not be opened. This reduces the complication rate considerably. The entire spinal cord is decompressed and is held in vision throughout. So, the chances of spinal cord damage is very very less.
Recognition:
This special procedure has been presented in many national and international meetings. This was awarded the ASSI Best Research Award in Bangalore in 2004 and also the prestigious APOA Award in Korea in Seoul in 2007

Community outreach Programmes
of Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore.
“Swasam”
Caring for life.
The corporate social responsibility programmes of Ganga Hospital will be consolidated under the theme ‘ Swasam’ which will breathe new life to the injured and disabled through ten ‘ Community out-reach social service programmes’.
Project Helpline – “Help for the helpless”
Free deformity correction surgeries for poor children

Case 1
Special features of this procedure;
