Unicel is a leader in Enterprise Messaging Solutions (EMS). The Company's primary offering is SS7 based solutions to Mobile Network Operators across the world. The company is an Application Service Provider (ASP) in the EMS space.

Enterprises 'need' new and effective medium for data exchange, to maintain their competitive edge. Through SMS', Enterprises can leverage greater impact of communication and convenience, operational efficiency can be improved, would achieve aid in client acquisition in new markets and this will consequently contribute in maximizing revenues. The applications in the Enterprise segment can be broadly classified into two types:

1. Push only (Some examples: Advertising/ permission based marketing, Transport & Logistics facilitation, Monitoring security application, Emergency Response, Alerts, Human Resource communications, etc.)

2. Push-pull with a Virtual Number (Some examples: Mobile Banking, Sales Force Automation, Supply Chain Management, Fleet management (LBS), Email 2 SMS and vice versa)
The company's objective is to meet the critical need of the Enterprise to offer a medium to "Pull" messages or to interact with either its Customers or Employees, without having its Customers or Employees to pay premium SMS charges for it. Therefore, in a Virtual Number scenario, the Enterprise pays for either sending (push) or receiving (pull) the SMS. The value for the Enterprise is phenomenal depending on the application that the Enterprise wants to launch.

Here are some services like - *Virtual Number Service, Mobile Banking, Bulk Push SMS, General HR Communication, Media Integration, Sales Force Automation, Supply Chain Management, Fleet management & LBS, Transport & Logistics facilitation, Monitoring security applications, Emergency Response and Email2SMS Alerts.

GlobalOne Platform is an innovative SS7 platform from Unicel, which is a combination of a SMSC and SMS Gateway. GlobalOne has capability to provide multiple applications out of single box. Following applications are currently deployed on GlobalOne Platform:

o Coming up shortly: Voice, WAP and USSD Services for Enterprises

By November 2008, GlobalOne SMSC will have a combined capacity of over 1000 SMS/ second to offer to the Enterprises.

*What is a Virtual Number?
Virtual Number is a regular 10 digit mobile number virtually present on a mobile network. Its not available on a handset, but virtually alive on the mobile network that is integrated to an application. It is similar to a short code e.g. 57575, 56006, etc. but the economics are different - cheaper than a short code in terms of Initial setup and Recurring costs. Virtual number application operates through GlobalOne Platform– A mobile subscriber sends the keyword to a virtual number (10 digit number). Virtual number platform sends it to the appropriate application where the relevant information of the sender is hosted. The backend application uses the virtual number platform (GlobalOne Platform) to push the right content back to the mobile number where the request has come from.

Apart from SMS, Unicel is coming up with unique SS7 based and other boxes, extending to WAP, USSD and Voice. The company intends to open at least 1 overseas office this year. Also, Unicel Technologies is evaluating business opportunities in Tier A & B cities. The presence will be either directly or through Distributors and resellers that the company is currently evaluating to appoint.

Vinay Agrawal is the founder of Unicel Technologies Pvt. Limited – a wireless solution provider company that is looking to bring the power of text based services to all enterprises, big or small. From its humble beginning in 2003 in a rented flat in Chennai (that Flat served as company’s development center, office as well as founder’s residence) –Today company has offices in all Indian Metros, and boasts about 400+ enterprise customers all over India (100+ Fortune 500) and over 50 employees.

Fresh out of an MBA from SITM in 2000, Vinay started his career in another promising startup – Aircel, a telecom operator with license in TN circle - till 2002. During these two years he learnt everything in wireless space, be it technology, billing, VAS or consumer experience – as company experienced exponential growth during those years and being a start up it was easy to move around and contribute in many areas as opposed to any other large and established player . While in Aircel, Vinay realized that there were lots of inefficiencies when it came to provide a tailored SMS based solution to an Enterprise. He recognized that mobile operators are quite efficient in putting together a fixed offering around a consumer taste – but equally inefficient there when it comes to understanding the need of a company that is looking to leverage SMS infrastructure. Also, no two enterprise's needs are same – and there was a big gap in terms of a services based technology platform.

While is Aircel, he met Kishore K Reddy, and formed a company that sought to solve the Enterprise problem by developing a plug and play platform that can wrap services around it with little programming effort, hence creating a truly customizable SMS offering at lowest cost points. For next one year, duo developed from scratch GlobalOne Messaging platform, extensively testing and perfecting it with Beta customers.

Today, GlobalOne is the underline platform that is serving about 300 SMS per second(with capability of offering VAS such as LBS, Voice Platform etc.), they have brought in numerous customers – almost all of them get services exactly the way they need, and in process creating something that is valuable for both Mobile Operators and Customers.

A technologist at heart, he serves as the Director and CTO of the Company where he continues to drive the team of technologist as well the future direction of the company.

I did my 2nd Year B-tech internship from Unicel. Incidently, I was the first trainee that Unicel entertained. Since my 2nd Year i have had 3 interships and all of them have turned out to be really successful. There is so much room to move around, indescribable flexibility and incredible scope to learn. As for Vinay sir ,he is a force to reckon with.
