"What are we lining up for year 2 at Gaea? Our plan is to grow organically. We want to bring products into the market, which solve interesting business problems. Year 1 saw us launch BlueMarble, a wave planning simulation tool for the logistics industry. Year 2, we are working on Magellan, a way to visualise your projects, by capturing the 'action' beyond the typical Gantt charts that project managers use."

"The much-required correction has happened in the industry. What we may gradually head towards is a greater interest in JV (joint venture) development, with ratios becoming more rational and being a win-win for the owner and the developer. Recently, the Government has initated moves to increase the availability of residential flats by floating tenders for the joint development with the TNHB. Similarly, it is necessary to increase the availability of commercial space by developing large chunks of land on all the National Highways at the outskirts of the city. This will lead to the development of the suburbs, the easing of traffic, and generating employment."

"Education is joyful. And we all have the capacity to be lifelong learners. With this attitude, the whole world be a richer and more peaceful place. How can one practise lifelong learning? Simple things can help. Such as, reading the news in a critical manner, looking out the car or bus window and asking oneself questions about what one sees, and always reading and talking/listening to gain different perspectives. Can technology help in being a lifelong learner? You need a certain degree of education to take the help of technology in this regard. For example, the Internet has so much information. If you are not critical and you do not think about the motives behind some of the sites, then you could be easily confused and not necessarily get a true view of an issue."

"The objective of investor protection is to separately show the amount due to them in the balance sheet under the Companies Act. Examples of such amounts are: unclaimed dividend, deposits, and share application money. Schedule VI is not applicable to the banking companies; and the format as provided under the Banking Regulation Act does not have any provision mandating the disclosure of funds due to the investors. With a good number of even public sector banks being listed on the stock exchanges, we need, in the interest of shareholders, an amendment to the format of bank balance sheets requiring the disclosure of investors' funds."

"One of the things we strive in our business is to be the most admired company, be it for the employees, customers, shareholders and suppliers. How do we execute that aim? The first piece we began focussing on is sustainability. We are, for example, the first company to have a hybrid technology for commercial vehicles on road today. Some of our customers are UPS, Coke, Foton Bus Company (China) and FedEx. We have spoken to Government officials in India to bring these fuel-saving applications (up to 60 per cent) here. The other piece I'd like to talk about is UPS technologies."

"Take care or perish. This is the stark reality that companies face vis-a-vis environment. Which explains the spurt in environment-related initiatives that corporates have been launching in recent times. For example, many manufacturing companies have achieved zero-waste/ complete recycling. Sundram Fasteners Ltd is a success case, where effluent water is recycled for the garden; a small pond has also been created within the factory premises, and it attracts a lot of birds. India Pistons Ltd and Thirumalai Chemicals Ltd too have adopted similar strategies..."

"A major differentiator in our offering is transparency in property deals. For instance, the agents do not normally want to disclose the kind of commission that they would require upon the deal being successful. Refreshingly, therefore, the properties listed on ValuePROPS display the percentage of commission required by the agent. Again, as a measure of openness, we have incorporated the 'commenting' system for every property, using which a user can record his/her comments about the property inspected. Rather than stopping as a dotcom, we will soon be launching brick-and-mortar 'retail stores' in the 'property services' space, in Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore."

"What are the characteristics of a business that we choose to enter? One, the opportunity must be large, and therefore the business potential is scalable. Two, we wish to enter the business early. Three, we should be able to create IP. Four, the market structure should be such that the market power resides with us. Five, we should have the capability and strength to go after the business. Six, we like B2C businesses, because we are good at creating consumer brands, and we like to run a business-to-business salesforce. Seven, the business should have a high operating leverage; in Naukri, for example, close to 90 per cent of the incremental revenue goes to the bottomline. And eight, our primary focus is India; and overseas markets where there is a large Indian population, such as the Middle East."

"The 'future' of water heaters is the SPHP (super polymer high performance) technology that we launched this week. It is a step up in everything that you want in a water heater - such as, energy efficiency, pressure rating, and resistance to corrosion. Water quality in the outskirts of Chennai is 'aggressive', meaning corrosive of the tank. This is because the water supply in these places is not treated for the removal of chlorides and fluorides. For instance, a tank that takes 20 years to corrode in a treated-water area may have a life of less than a year in a place with untreated water quality supply. The new Racold offering, the SPHP, has polymer coating inside of the tank to prevent any chemical action between 'aggressive' water and the body of the tank."

"A quote I recently came across was this: 'Today's parents are so keen to give kids what they didn't have as kids that they forget to give them what they did have as kids.' Today's kids are, therefore, denied freedom to experiment, of choice, to be themselves, to build relationships, and to grow at their pace, finding their own path. Parents are extremely anxious that their children are not keeping up with the peers."

"Today the tea industry in India is going through a supply crisis, especially from the North-East region. There is a very small carry-forward stock from last year, and the current crop has been delayed due to climatic reasons. Crop is good in South India but it is not able to make good for the shortfall. If you look at the international scenario, there is a shortfall of crop in Kenya due to climatic conditions and political problems. As a result of these reasons, tea prices have moved up by about Rs 20 per kg, at the procurement level. The probability of prices softening, if at all it happens, is likely in October-November, but is not expected to go back to the levels of last year. "

"Tomorrow we are releasing a report on 'Value Creation in Indian Banking' which analyses the trends in the banking, and non-banking financial services. A key finding is that Indian banking tops the chart in value creation in the world and also among the BRIC countries. This, despite the steepest correction in the first quarter of this year. An alarming finding is that the gap between the P/E multiples of the private sector and the public sector has been widening. We term it 'the business model discount'. This has interesting implications for the government. For instance, even keeping aside the privatisation debate, a change in business model, organisational design, and a few other parameters could lead to increase in valuation, and make it much easier to handle the capital constraints of PSBs without losing the public sector character."
